For nearly a century, antibiotics have been one of medicine's greatest triumphs, turning once-deadly infections into routine cures. That triumph is now unravelling. In October 2025, the World Health Organization warned that antibiotic resistance is rising sharply: one in every six bacterial infections worldwide is now resistant to the drugs meant to treat it.
The WHO's largest-ever surveillance report found that resistance increased in more than 40 percent of the drug-bug combinations it tracked between 2018 and 2023, rising by an average of 5 to 15 percent each year. Bacterial resistance was already associated with more than 4.7 million deaths in 2021. On current trends, the annual toll could climb toward 10 million by 2050 — a return, in effect, to an age when a simple infection could kill.

A Problem Human Ingenuity Cannot Outrun
The tragedy of antimicrobial resistance is that it is driven partly by the very success of the drugs. Overuse in medicine and agriculture, incomplete treatments, and the sale of antibiotics without oversight have all accelerated the evolution of resistant bacteria. Meanwhile, the pipeline of new antibiotics has slowed to a trickle, because developing them is expensive and unprofitable. Humanity is locked in an arms race against microbes that reproduce and adapt far faster than laboratories can respond. Medicine can slow the crisis; it cannot declare victory.

The Bible acknowledges that the physical world, including the human body, is currently subject to decay and "corruption." Sickness, aging, and death are realities no medical advance has been able to abolish. But the same passage holds out a hope: that this bondage to decay is not permanent, and that creation will one day be "set free."
A Promise of Health No Medicine Can Match
Human medicine, at its very best, fights disease after it strikes. The Bible describes something categorically different — a future in which sickness itself is removed from human experience.

This is not the promise of a better hospital or a stronger antibiotic. It is the promise of a world in which the words "I am sick" are never spoken. No resistant infection, no incurable disease, no failing treatment — because the underlying condition of human imperfection that gives rise to sickness will be healed.

The Root Cause Finally Cured
Why is humanity vulnerable to disease and death at all? The Bible traces it to the loss of human perfection at the start of human history — a flaw that no science can reverse. This is the true "resistance" that medicine cannot overcome: not merely bacteria that outwit antibiotics, but a body subject to decay. God's Kingdom addresses that root cause directly, restoring humanity to the health and vitality that were the original purpose for human life.

The world's doctors and scientists are waging a courageous fight against antimicrobial resistance, and their work will save many lives in the years ahead. But even the WHO frames its goal as slowing the crisis, not ending disease. The Bible points beyond containment to cure — a government under which the last infection will be treated, the last illness healed, and sickness will pass permanently out of human history.
