Floods sweep away homes, storms flatten towns, droughts wither harvests, and wildfires consume entire communities. Disasters are becoming more frequent, more costly, and more devastating. In 2025, the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) published its Global Assessment Report, revealing the true scale of the damage.
Direct losses from disasters now average around $202 billion a year — more than double the $70–80 billion annual average from 1970 to 2000. But when cascading effects and damage to ecosystems are included, UNDRR estimates the true global cost exceeds $2.3 trillion every year. The burden falls hardest on developing countries, where disasters push families into poverty and governments deeper into debt.
The Cost of Disasters (UNDRR, GAR 2025):
- Direct losses: Around $202 billion a year, and rising.
- Then and now: Up from $70–80 billion a year between 1970 and 2000.
- True cost: Over $2.3 trillion annually when cascading and ecosystem costs are counted.
- Hardest hit: Developing countries, trapped in cycles of loss and debt.
- Systemic risk: Disasters increasingly threaten global financial stability.
Rebuilding Only to Lose Again
Early warning systems and better construction have saved countless lives, and UNDRR urges nations to invest in resilience. Yet many communities rebuild in the same vulnerable places, only to be struck again. Insurance is becoming unaffordable in high-risk areas, and the poorest nations cannot afford protection at all. Humans can prepare for disasters, but they cannot prevent the forces of nature from striking.
— Luke 21:11
Jesus foretold a time marked by great natural calamities. While God does not cause these disasters, their growing toll highlights how vulnerable humans are and how much we need protection that no government can supply.
The One Whom Nature Obeys
When Jesus was on earth, he gave a small preview of what he will do as King of God's Kingdom. Caught in a violent storm on the Sea of Galilee, his disciples feared for their lives.
— Mark 4:39, 41
That miracle demonstrated that Jesus has power over the forces of nature. As the ruler of God's Kingdom, he will use that power to ensure that no storm, flood, or earthquake will ever again destroy human lives or homes.
Secure Dwellings for All
The Bible describes a future in which people will live in lasting security, with no fear of the next disaster.
— Isaiah 32:18
Disaster risk reduction is wise and necessary, and it will save many lives in the years ahead. But the rising costs show that human efforts can only reduce damage, not end it. God's Kingdom will bring a world where the earth's forces work in harmony with mankind — and "a great calm" will be permanent.
