For decades, governments have waged a "war on drugs." Yet according to the United Nations, drug use is now higher than ever. In June 2026, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) released its World Drug Report, estimating that 331 million people used drugs in 2024 — about 6.2 percent of the world's population aged 15 to 64, up from 5.2 percent a decade earlier.
The report warns that synthetic drugs are increasingly replacing plant-based ones, and new psychoactive substances are emerging faster than regulators can track them. In 2024 alone, authorities identified 755 different new psychoactive substances, 118 of them reported for the first time. Drug use was linked to nearly half a million deaths in 2023.
Global Drug Use (UNODC World Drug Report 2026):
- People using drugs: 331 million in 2024 — a record high.
- Rising share: 6.2% of people aged 15–64, up from 5.2% a decade earlier.
- Opioids: About 63 million people used opioids.
- New substances: 755 new psychoactive substances identified in 2024, 118 for the first time.
- Deaths: Nearly half a million deaths linked to drug use in 2023.
Why Prohibition and Policing Fall Short
Nations have tried enforcement, treatment, prevention campaigns, and harm reduction. Each has helped some people. But criminal networks adapt quickly, producing cheaper and more potent substances. And the underlying reasons people turn to drugs — pain, hopelessness, trauma, loneliness, and the search for escape — remain unaddressed in a world full of stress and suffering.
— 2 Corinthians 7:1
The Bible's standards protect people from habits that damage body and mind. Many who have applied its counsel have found the strength to break free from addiction, supported by a loving community and a renewed sense of purpose.
Hope That Heals the Heart
Drugs often promise escape from pain. The Bible offers something better: real hope and a relationship with a loving God who understands our struggles and helps us to overcome them.
— Isaiah 48:17
When people learn that their lives have meaning and that a better future is coming, the emptiness that drives so many to drugs can be filled with peace and purpose.
A World Without Addiction
Under God's Kingdom, the pain, despair, and injustice that push people toward drugs will be removed. Criminal networks will be gone, and people will find their joy in clean, healthy, and meaningful living.
— Psalm 37:11
Doctors, counselors, and recovery workers are helping many to rebuild their lives, and their work is precious. But the record figures in the UN's report show that human solutions are losing ground. The Bible promises a world where no one needs to escape reality — because reality itself will be good.
