A Mother Lost Every Two Minutes

Every two minutes, a woman dies from complications of pregnancy or childbirth, and aid cuts now threaten hard-won progress. The Bible promises a time when death will be no more.

The birth of a child should be one of life's happiest moments. Yet for hundreds of thousands of families each year, it ends in tragedy. In April 2025, the World Health Organization and its UN partners published new estimates showing that about 260,000 women died in 2023 from complications related to pregnancy or childbirth — roughly one every two minutes.

There has been real progress: maternal deaths fell by about 40 percent between 2000 and 2023. But progress has slowed significantly since 2016. And the UN agencies warned that sudden cuts to international aid are now forcing countries to close clinics, scale back maternal care, and limit access to life-saving supplies for hemorrhage, pre-eclampsia, and malaria. Most maternal deaths are preventable, yet the poorest women remain at greatest risk.

Maternal Mortality (WHO and UN partners, 2025):

  • Deaths: About 260,000 women died from pregnancy or childbirth complications in 2023.
  • Frequency: Roughly one death every two minutes.
  • Progress: A 40% decline since 2000 — but largely stalled since 2016.
  • Preventable: Most deaths result from conditions that can be treated with proper care.
  • New threat: Aid cuts are closing clinics and limiting life-saving supplies.

Why Progress Has Stalled

Doctors, midwives, and health agencies know how to prevent most maternal deaths. The problem is not knowledge but access. In conflict zones, rural areas, and the poorest countries, women often lack skilled care, medicines, and emergency transport. When funding is cut, the most vulnerable women pay the price — sometimes with their lives.

"In birth pains you will bring forth children."
— Genesis 3:16

The Bible explains that the pain and danger of childbirth were not part of God's original purpose. They are among the consequences of humanity's loss of perfection — a condition that medicine can ease but cannot reverse.

God Values Mothers and Children

The Bible presents children as a precious gift and shows deep concern for mothers. God's purpose is for families to grow and flourish without fear.

"Look! Children are an inheritance from God; the fruit of the womb is a reward."
— Psalm 127:3

Under God's Kingdom, the health problems that endanger mothers and babies will be removed. Childbirth will no longer be a moment of danger but only one of joy.

No More Grief at the Cradle

The Bible promises a future in which death itself — including the death of mothers in childbirth — will be eliminated.

"He will swallow up death forever, and the Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from all faces."
— Isaiah 25:8

Health workers are saving countless lives, and every mother they protect is a victory. But the stalling of progress and the threat of aid cuts reveal how fragile human solutions are. The Bible points to a time when no family will ever again mourn a mother lost in giving life.
