More Wars Than Ever Recorded

In 2025, the number of armed conflicts involving states reached the highest level since records began in 1946. The Bible foretells a government that will bring lasting peace.

A war-ravaged city contrasted with the same city rebuilt in peace and harmony

After the Second World War, many hoped that international institutions would usher in an age of peace. Eighty years later, the world is moving in the opposite direction. In June 2026, the Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) — one of the world's most respected sources of conflict data — reported that the number of state-based armed conflicts rose to 65 in 2025, the highest number since its records began in 1946.

Conflicts between states doubled for the second year in a row, reaching eight — also a record. UCDP counted 13 wars, the most since 1992, and recorded about 244,600 deaths in organized violence, making 2025 one of the deadliest years in three decades. Deaths from violence deliberately aimed at civilians reached their highest level in more than 30 years.

Armed Conflict Worldwide (UCDP, 2026):

  • State-based conflicts: 65 in 2025 — the most since 1946.
  • Between states: 8 interstate conflicts, also a record high.
  • Wars: 13 conflicts with over 1,000 battle deaths — the most since 1992.
  • Deaths: About 244,600 people killed in organized violence.
  • Civilians: Deliberate killing of civilians reached its highest level in over 30 years.

Why Peace Keeps Slipping Away

The UN Security Council is often paralyzed by the competing interests of its most powerful members. Peace agreements collapse, alliances shift, and new rivalries emerge. As one UCDP analyst observed, recent developments "indicate increased international tensions." Even with all the tools of modern diplomacy, the world is becoming less peaceful, not more.

"You are going to hear of wars and reports of wars... For nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom."
— Matthew 24:6, 7

Jesus foretold an era marked by widespread warfare between nations. The record-breaking number of conflicts today is a striking fulfillment of his words, and part of a larger sign identifying our times.

The Prince of Peace

The Bible identifies Jesus Christ as the one whom God has appointed to rule the earth. His government will succeed where every human institution has failed.

"To the increase of his rule and to peace there will be no end."
— Isaiah 9:7

His rule will not depend on fragile treaties or a divided council. It will be backed by divine power and guided by perfect justice and love — the only foundations on which lasting peace can be built.

Violence Will No Longer Be Heard

The Bible describes a world in which the sounds of war will be silenced forever.

"Violence will no longer be heard in your land, nor devastation or destruction within your borders."
— Isaiah 60:18

Peacemakers and humanitarian workers deserve deep respect for their efforts to reduce the suffering of war. But the record number of conflicts shows that human governments cannot secure peace. The Bible points to a Kingdom that will end war permanently and fill the earth with genuine peace and security.
