Drowning in Plastic

The world produces more than 400 million tonnes of plastic a year, and talks on a global treaty have collapsed. The Bible promises a cleansed and restored earth.

A beach and ocean choked with plastic waste contrasted with a pristine, thriving coastline

Plastic is everywhere — in our oceans, rivers, soil, food, and even our bodies. According to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the world produces more than 400 million tonnes of plastic every year, about half of it designed to be used only once. Less than 10 percent is ever recycled, and millions of tonnes leak into lakes, rivers, and seas each year. Without action, plastic production could triple by 2060.

In 2022, nations agreed to negotiate the first legally binding global treaty to end plastic pollution. But in August 2025, after talks in Geneva involving 184 countries, negotiations collapsed without agreement. Nearly 100 countries wanted limits on plastic production, but a group of oil-producing nations refused. A follow-up session in February 2026 dealt only with organizational matters, leaving the world still without a treaty.

The Plastic Crisis (UNEP; INC Negotiations):

  • Production: Over 400 million tonnes of plastic a year.
  • Single use: About half is designed to be used only once.
  • Recycling: Less than 10% of plastic is ever recycled.
  • Outlook: Production could triple by 2060 without action.
  • Treaty: Talks among 184 countries collapsed in August 2025 without agreement.

When Economic Interests Win

The failure of the treaty talks shows a familiar pattern: nations agree that a problem is serious but cannot agree to act when their economic interests are threatened. Recycling programs and local bans have helped, but they cannot keep pace with ever-increasing production. Meanwhile, the poorest communities often bear the burden of plastic waste shipped from wealthier nations.

"The land has been polluted by its inhabitants."
— Isaiah 24:5

The Bible recognized long ago that humans would pollute the land they live on. Today, that pollution has reached the deepest ocean trenches and the highest mountain peaks.

The Earth Belongs to Its Creator

The earth is not simply a resource to be exploited. The Bible reminds us that it belongs to the One who made it — and he has not abandoned it.

"To God belong the earth and everything in it, the world and those living in it."
— Psalm 24:1

God will hold accountable those who ruin his creation, and he will restore the earth to the beauty and purity he originally intended.

Oceans Made New

The Bible describes a future in which all creation rejoices, freed from the damage humans have inflicted on it.

"Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be joyful; let the sea thunder and all that fills it. Let the fields rejoice and everything in them."
— Psalm 96:11, 12

Scientists, activists, and ordinary citizens are working to reduce plastic waste, and their efforts matter. But the collapse of the treaty talks shows how hard it is for nations to put the planet ahead of profit. The Bible promises a government that will heal the earth — its oceans, rivers, and lands — and keep it clean forever.
